....But it'll be worth it. :-)
Are you ready???
Are you ready???
OK, so to preface this I need to remind you that I am a TALL gal. 5 feet 11 inces, to be exact.
And my legs take up a great deal of those 71 inches. A 35-inch inseam makes me ridiculously happy.
But it is also relatively hard to find ... and more importantly - KEEP!
I can't tell you how many times I have "ruined" my just-barely-long-enough jeans by putting them in the dryer. :(
And therein lies my problem. Or part of my problem, anyway.
Let me put this in pictures ...
Jeans, pants, and various other dryer unfriendly articles of clothing hung on the coat hooks and any other hooks I can find (like the one inside my ironing board cabinet door).
I NEED a drying rack. But 1) I don't really have enough room for one (if I still want to move around my laundry room, anyway), and 2) I don't really love the look of those metal industrial-looking drying racks you can buy in the stores.
Enter: this old wooden ladder.
Which I painted turquoise blue (the same turquoise blue I used on the trunk on the front porch!)...And then I sanded and scuffed and stained it up a little bit ...
and screwed some hooks in four spots.
And THEN ... I got these shower hooks for $4.95 from Amazon.com.
And I spray painted them Rustoleum Cherry Red (to match the old laundry cart that also hangs out in this room).
And then I talked my handy, helpful husband into helping me hang the whole thing from the laundry room ceiling!
I bought four identical lengths of chain at the hardware store and painted them the same color as our walls (so that they would blend in as much as possible - I'd rather have the ladder be the focal point than the chains!).And here is the finished product!
It's only been up for a week, but I'm lovin' every moment!
Here it is in action...
Total cost for the entire project (because I already had the old wooden ladder) was less than $10.00 ... so worth every penny! And I love the feeling of taking something old and forgotten and turning it into something functional and CUTE!
Thanks for stopping by to check out my latest project ... to see the other projects I've been working on over the last month or so, look HERE!
P.S. Have you checked out my very first giveaway!? Please help me celebrate 100 followers, and go take a look! And if you like what you see, I'd love for you to follow me! :-)

genius! love it :-)
ReplyDeletewhat a fabulous idea :)
ReplyDeletelots of old ladders in my garage, so i might have to give this a whirl :)
love your blog!
This reminds me of the ladder I used to hang in my country kitchen back in the 80's, when I was a young bride in my first house. Back then, I used to hang my dried florals and herbs from it! Great idea to re-purpose your old ladder as a drying rack.
ReplyDelete:-) Sue
That is such a great idea! It is reallllly cute.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great idea! Love it. sooo creative. Love the color you chose :)
ReplyDeleteLove your ladder - colors and all! I am so glad to find this because my daughter hangs her things everywhere - even the stair rail going down to the washroom. Can't wait to show her this. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow!!!! This is such a great idea! I definitely need to do this to my laundry room when we redo it. My husband insists that his clothes be hung to dry so they don't shrink!!!! I am featuring this at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com. Grab my "featuredc" button.
ReplyDeleteThis is so darling! I love it!!

It looks soooo pretty! I want one of these like stat. I hang my baby's diapers outside to sun & dry but this would be great for rainy days and clothing items that I don't like to dry.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm a mere 5' 2.5" {that half inch is vital} so I may need a step stool. ;)
LOVE LOVE LOVE this!! Awesome idea that I can't wait to steal!! Ha!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO inspired! I love it and wished my laundry room was not this teeny weeny room...I need to find a mini ladder or something. What a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteTHAT is awesome!! And I totally understand the concern with the jeans!!! I'm 5'10" with a 34" inseam, and I have the same problem!! (You should check out Vanity at your mall. I recently got some jeans there with a 37" inseam!! Insane!)
ReplyDeleteThis is truly inspired!! You are a BRILLIANT woman!!
http://dojocrafting.blogspot.com
Okay, you get my vote as the most clever woman with the greatest idea of the week, month, year maybe. This is fantastically cute, clever and handy. Bravo!!!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you. Amy

Love this!! I'm in the process of purchasing our first home and I can't believe how excited i am to be decorating a laundry room and pantry! I may have to use this wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it...now I'm going to have to keep my eye out for an old library.
ReplyDeleteYour newest follower, Jessica
That is fabulous; exactly what I need in my laundry room! I love the colors you chose as well!
ReplyDeleteThat is soooooo fantastic! I love how you completely repurposed the ladder and not only is it functional it is just so darling in your lovely laundry room. Great job! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking this to Inspiration Friday,
Vanessa
Hey, I am visiting from "Just Something I Whipped Up" and this idea is amazing!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, why have I not seen your blog before? Where have I been??? What a totally genius idea! :) I think we will be seeing people copying this idea all over the place!! :) Thanks for linking up this week. Adding you to my blog list of "Must Reads". xoxo
ReplyDeleteThat is so freaking adorable, but then again I am not surprised being you are one of the most creative people I know!! LOVE it!!! What a great idea to hang it from the ceiling. I would have never thought of that! Now if only I had a bigger laundry room since I would always be getting slapped in the face with my jeans and shirts : )
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute and so clever!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteJen
Scissors & Spatulas
LOVE this idea!! I have a small laundry room and need places to hang stuff something like this would be perfect, seriously awesome idea!!
ReplyDeletehttp://craftiestthings.blogspot.com
Love this. I too being tall (enter pants shrinkage issues) with a very small laundry room which is also the back door may have to tackle this. Thanks.
ReplyDeletebellakates.blogspot.com
Great idea! What did your husband use to anchor it to support the weight of wet clothes? I had a similar idea- but without the awesome ladder- but my hubby nixed it due to weight concerns (and the corresponding ceiling repair). Please share so I can convince my husband it's doable!
ReplyDeleteThis is PURE BRILLIANCE. I have been looking for a solution for my tiny laundry room and this is perfection! Thanks!
ReplyDeletemyfabulesslife.blogspot.com
Wow! that is such a cool idea! I never have enough place to hang my clothes to dry! This looks fabulous and is functional. Thanks for sharing! wildflowersandwhimsy.blogspot.com

Dear "Anonymous" ...
ReplyDeleteMy husband used his stud-finder to make sure he was screwing the hooks into studs. It is very strong! I could probably use it as monkey bars if I wanted to! :)~
Creative, beautiful and functional! I love it! So glad I saw your link-up over at Flamingo Toes! I'll be "stumbling" and "pinning" your post for sure!
ReplyDeleteNew follower,
Jenn/Rook No. 17
Love this idea! Now I just have to keep my eye out for the perfect ladder!
ReplyDelete- Andrea
Thanks! I had wanted to suspend just a rod (functional but boring compared to your idea). Our studs run parallel with the direction I needed it to hang and they're not in the right spot to use them but I think the ladder could totally work! I would just have to have four separate hooks to hang it, 2 in each stud and it should work! Great idea- now I just need to find a cool old ladder!
ReplyDeleteP.S.- We also named our daughter Lucy!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, my husband's name is Scott too! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWhere, oh where, did my ladder go? I have been hunting for old ladders forever! Someday I will find one!
ReplyDeleteLove this! If my laundry room was big enough, I would sooo do this!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I featured it on my blog today!

ReplyDeleteI featured you on Toast of Tuesday!! Come grab a button!!
ReplyDeletehttp://polkadotsonparade.blogspot.com/2011/04/toast-of-tuesday_26.html
Cute! If it was strong enough, it could be used to hang pots in the kitchen, hang on the wall it could display towels or magazines, throw a string of lights or greenery around it just for fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat project! I linked this to my ladders post too, it's a really good idea!!
ReplyDeleteI just found you through Stumble and can I just say this is brilliant. You had me at the 5 foot 11 inches, the 35 inch inseam, and the shrinking pants. I am 5 foot 10 and have a 35 inch inseam. I have shrunk more pants than I can count. So I can relate to the not drying clothes thing. And I love this idea. I have a small laundry room and this would work great!
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable. It reminds me of the drying racks they have in much of Central America, but cuter.
ReplyDeleteOne thing they have though is a pulley system so you can lower the rack down and load the clothes on easily...it might be a way to improve this already great design.
LOVE this creative idea!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great idea for a pot rack in the kitchen, too!!!!
ReplyDelete*sigh* Still searching for a ladder of my very own... Nice job with it!
ReplyDeleteso cute!
ReplyDeleteThe best part of the project is finding a man to put it up for you....where does one get one of those?
ReplyDeleteDo you happen to know how long each section of chain is? LOVE this idea and I actually have an old ladder in my garage!!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. It looks so good and it looks like it is easy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea! Not sure I should be hanging things from my apartment ceiling but I'll file this away for when I live in a more permanent place. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe did this over our Christmas break. Our pics are here:
ReplyDeletehttp://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/408179_10150547882615071_586340070_11204544_299774440_n.jpg
I am in the process of making one of these and I was wondering...how did you paint the chains?
ReplyDeleteSo clever! Just love it. Stopping by from Not Just A Housewife blog ...
ReplyDeleteJust an idea, but if you put your clothes on hangers 1st, then hang the hangers onto your ladder, they will dry more into shape and faster because they aren't so bunched up....plus you could fit lots more clothes on it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. My dryer seems to shrink alot of our clothes. I have to put up 3 drying racks that I put in 1 of the kids rm so I don't have to walk around them. I wish my laundry room was not the back entrance way so I could use it.
ReplyDeleteFabulous project! I needed an idea like this for the hideous laundry room I am revamping, so thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI found this post through stumble upon. Love the idea!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the dirty clothes cat and basket?
ReplyDeleteI found the cart and basket at a local antique shop ....and just spray painted them up! :-)
DeleteI too would like to know where you found the cloths basket. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI found it at a local antique/"junk" shop! .... painted it and LOVE it! :-)
DeleteI really like this Ideal. I am in the same boat when it comes to space. I just build a small latter for another project, I could do the same for this...I THINK I WILL!! Thanks for the inspiration..
ReplyDeleteCharlene

ReplyDeleteI love the color you chose for the ladder! So cute! And great idea for the function!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this idea!! It is so creative, and such a space saver!!!!

ReplyDeleteWould make a pot rack!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea!!! it would work great in almost every room, I mean, lots of things can be hung up...I can't wait to try the same. I gotta find some thrift stores or something with some simple rung ladders like that. Great post! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the ladder racket ideas! The color is awesome and chic. Something like this would be perfect at my house away from my toddler.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!only thing I would do in addition...hang the clothes on hangers...once dry just pop in the closet! No folding Voila!
ReplyDeleteJust saw this on pinterest, and I was so excited to finally find the original source so that I could give you the credit! Fantastic idea. I hope I can adapt it to my hallway laundry room.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance, I'd love it if you visited me at OneCreativeMommy.com. I host a linky party every Fri-Wed. I'd love to see some more of your ideas.
