Shopping Allowance, 2012

I have mentioned more than a few times that I am a shopaholic.

{Time out.}

If you don't happen to be a shopaholic .... or don't have any idea what I'm talking about .... please feel free to click the little X in the corner of your web browser and stop right here!  'Cause otherwise, this post might seem pretty superficial and petty to you.

Okay
Now that everyone has been properly warned (and there are no haters left out there, I hope!), I will say it again.

I love to shop.

Nordstrom and Anthropologie are my drugs of choice.

I could easily (and happily) visit these establishments several times a month.
And it wouldn't be all that shocking for me to buy things each and every trip.

It's pathetic, seriously.

Not something I'm proud of.

But I'm striving to change that!

Because of my SIMPLIFY mantra this year (per my New Year's post),  I am on a quest to have less.  And want less.
And a big part of that is shopping less.

A whole LOT less.

I have a partner in crime.
My partner in more than one capacity, in fact.
Sherry is my teaching partner (she teaches in the mornings, I teach in the afternoons), my friend, my neighbor, my shopping accomplice.
You've "met" her here before (as well as her little guy and Lucy's buddy, Cam), but just in case you forgot ...
Here we are in Disneyland (she's Grumpy, I'm Goofy).....
(She's not really grumpy, by the way.)
Here we are at the rodeo last Summer
(with the Kenny Chesney look-alike behind me).....
Here we are as Thing 1 and Thing 2 for Halloween this year .....

And here are she and Lucy.
I love this picture.
It's hanging in my Mom Cave

Anyway.
Now that you know Sherry (again)....
back to the point of this post!

The BOTH of us are shopaholics.
And since we kind of tend to (poorly) influence each other where shopping is concerned .... and since we see each other practically every day of our lives .... I decided we might as well be in this together.

So I made us a SHOPPING ALLOWANCE for the year!
Yep, that's right.
I said THE YEAR.
As in ALLLLLLLL of 2012.

This is going to be ONE.  TOUGH.  CHALLENGE.

The reality of it kind of makes me shake in my boots (of which I am allowed ONE pair this year, by the way!)

Whew!
It could be a long year!

So.  I'm putting this "out here" so you gals can help keep us accountable!
Don't be afraid to ask me every now and then how I'm doing with my NON-shopping!
Please!?
Believe me, I'm gonna need all the HELP I can get! :-)

I'll keep you all updated, too .... as I check items off my list.

Now.
Dare I ask .... are there any other crazy, obsessive shoppers out there???
Please tell me we aren't the only ones!!!

  1. I think the list is a great idea! I would be a shopaholic too but I always talk myself out of everything haha! :) I think you will do a great job sticking to your list. You seem very driven and motivated and want to achieve the goals you set for yourself. :)

  2. WHOA, good luck girls!!! That is a very 'lean' list for the two of you! But on a bright side for me, that frees up a lot of your weekends, I can keep them busy for you... riding our horses, skiing (with lots of laugh attacks), Bec you could take up running!, drinking coffee in cute shops isn't on that list... I could keep going! And don't worry when you have checked everything off your list, I am sure I will need help and you both can at least get your fix but won't have to pay for it!!!

  3. This is a fabulous idea! I may need to join you on this challenge though my list may vary a bit due to the fact that I live in florida and the weather is almost ALWAYS warm. Best of luck to the both of you!

  4. Lol, you crack me up Bec! =) I'm not a shop a holic by any stretch, I enjoy it, but don't do it much. However, that being said, I don't know that I could survive parts of your list, that is (as someone else said earlier) a lean list! Good luck and I know you can do it, when you set your mind to something, you make it happen! =)

  8. You know, I LIKE the idea of that list. I'm trying not to shop much, but I wonder what my list would look likeif I actually wrote down the things I bought. It might be more than I think. You've given me a good idea. Now, back to your post. Good luck with that. At least you have a partner in crime to keep you straight. I went shopping with my BFF Sat and she bought 10 items to my one. It was hard, let me tell you.

  9. Yes this will be sooooo hard. Especially being I've bought one thing off that list already. And yes Mickey we might have to shop vicariously through you:) its really good for me to live with less. We will save more and I will learn to use what i have in my closet. Heres to a shop free year: )

  10. This is a GREAT list. A very hard list, but you've covered most of the basics...What about Bras, Panties, Lounge Wear, Sports Wear.....seeee, I am already finding ways to cheat. I live in an extremely hot & humid climate, so I would also need to add shorts to that list.

    Wish you lots of luck

  11. How brave of you... and I mean BRAVE!! I know I wouldn't be able to do it. My shopping addiction is with craft supplies since I love to scrapbook and have a whole craft room to myself!! I always try and keep some money for new clothes, but it never happens, it always goes to crafts and I just can't help it. Even worse is that my craft room isn't really furnished so I don't have anywhere to put all the new supplies. I told myself this year I want to shop less also (yet buy furniture), and start using alot of my old supplies that I've never even touched! I hope I can do it lol and good luck to you also!!!

  13. Goodnight girl... this post is terrifying! My very first visit to your blog and I'm met with a shopping allowance! You are KILLING me.

In all seriousness, kudos to you chickadee. Absolutely feasible, its where you put your heart & what you choose to treasure! When its money saved and time better spent, you will be thankful (this coming from the wife of an investor, ha!).

    Love your sweet blog!

  14. I used to shop all.the.time. I stopped a couple years ago and now only shop when I really need something. It's super hard. But, trust me- once you see how much more money you have, it will feel amazing!!! Although, I will say, only 2 t-shirts! That's what I buy the most of, whenever I do buy something. Good luck!!! I think this is a great goal!

  15. I'm pretty addicted. But I shop for everyone else. My favortie victim of my shopping was my dog. (he passed away earlier this week) since we took the plunge into being a one vehicle family, I don't usually have the car in the day so theres less time to shop and I've had to find other ways to occupy myself. So I started blogging! ^^ I still am an impulsive buyer but my typically rather frugal husband is a huge help!

  16. So I LOVE to shop too but I have a rule. If I LOVE something and its expensive, I NEVER buy it. I leave and then if I think about it for a week and am still thinking about it, then I will go back and get it. This means I ONLY go back for things I love. I find that most of the stuff I think I have to have I usually forget about - meaning I clearly could live with out it :) I also sell jewelry for Stella & Dot...we do love shopaholics :) BUT we also encourage people to have a few go to outfits and then to mix and match your accessories. Accessories on a whole are much cheaper than seasonal clothing so you can make a few outfits go a few ways with a few different jewels! Lastly, my husband and I have a fun money budget. I get $75 a month and he does too. He spends his on weird boy stuff and I spend mine on clothes. This means if I want designer jeans, I can have them but I have to save for 2 months. Or if I want 10 cheap shirts from Old Navy I can go and get them. I encourage you to have a fun money budget - cause then if you get birthday money or christmas money or whatever then it goes in your fun money and you can splurge when and how you want - not buy everything but still feel at liberty to spoil yourself....I think this was the officially longest comment ever. You still love me, right?! ;)
